7th grade working with Keith Haring

The 7th grade art students are creating artwork ala Keith Haring.  Students have studied and examined Haring's artwork and his pop art style.  Students will create their own Haring inspired artwork based upon activities they enjoy doing.  Some students have selected bowling, basketball, video game playing or paint ball.  We have just started to put the initial sketches to paper.  Check back in to witness the progress.

Kindergarten self portraits

The Kindergarten class is studying faces and proportions to create their self portraits.  Students examined their faces and the faces of their peers as we discussed the shapes that make up the face.  Check in to witness the progress.

High School Japanese Oni Masks

The high school art classes are wrapping up a study of the Japanese Oni masks.  The Oni are a kind of Japanese folklore translated as demons, devils, orges or trolls. They are popular characters in Japanese art, literature and theatre.

2nd Grade Romare Bearden studies in music

The 2nd grade class just wrapped up a lesson on Romare Bearden and his cubist collage techniques.  We listened to various pieces of music including jazz, new age, instrumental, hip hop, r & b and soul.  Students selected an instrument that they wanted to focus on in their artwork.  Students used various clip art examples to study and sketch for their work.  Once selected, students needed to consider how to break up their backgrounds and think about a border.

6th grade pendulum painting machine - scientific investigation

I am a big believer that the fine arts can tie in to all areas of core curriculum.  Math, History, Language Arts, Science.  I have adopted the 6th grade elementary class for the upcoming Climax Springs Science Fair and we are investigating pendulums.  I had the class develop a hypothesis on what they thought a suspended paint container would do if swung.  Would the paint dribble out? pour out? create uniform lines? create disorganized and haphazard lines?  After our hypothesis was developed, I broke the class into 3 groups.  The pendulum group that would construct/develop the pendulum, the paint delivery group, and the paint creation group.  Each group had to collaborate on what the directive of their team should do.  They discussed ideas and executed them.  As each idea was explored, they discussed how it was working and modified their product as it was developed and tested.  Each team recored or noted their ideas, progress and modifications.  Here are some slides and video of what they accomplished.
