Learning about caricature

A caricature is a rendered image showing the features of its subject in a simplified or exaggerated way through sketching, pencil strokes or through other artistic drawings. Some of the earliest caricatures are found in the works of Leonardo da Vinci, who actively sought people with deformities to use as models. The point was to offer an impression of the original which was more striking than a portrait.
Mr. Harris's Intro to Art class studied portrait drawing and exaggeration through caricature.  Students selected celebrities and individuals who have distinctive features.

8th Grade Complementary Color Portraits

Students in the 8th grade studied the color wheel and created complementary color portraits.  Students selected their colors, created their tints and shades and sketched out their portraits.  Once sketched, began the objective or painting the portrait.
Students were challenged with multiple objective such as sketching a portrait, using the color wheel being mindful of the complementary colors, and mixing tints and shades of their complementary colors.

Annual Art Club Pumpkin Ball - Elementary Father/Daughter Dance

The 1st week of November always rings in the annual Art Club Pumpkin Ball.  This years theme centered around the movie, "The Nightmare Before Christmas".  Decorations featured pumpkins, Jack Skellington, Sally, Oogie Boogie and more.  Fathers danced the night away with their elementary daughters and enjoyed snacks, beverages and dance festivities.

Art Club service projects

The Climax Springs art club is always striving to support our local community in providing and participating in service activities.  Recently the Climax Springs art club repainted the extremely faded handicapped parking spots around our school.  Students spent one of the last warm afternoons early in December, dedicated to painting the spaces.

Dia de los Muertos -2105

Dia de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead—is a holiday celebrated on November 1. Although marked throughout Latin America, Dia de los Muertos is most strongly associated with Mexico, where the tradition originated.
Our Climax Springs Art and Spanish classes have teamed up to study and experience this cultural holiday experience. In October, we visited the Mattie Rhodes Center in Kansas City and immersed ourselves in the altars, the candy skulls, the stories and the tin ornaments.

Learning about the altars

Each altar is family or person specific and each has a unique story

The most familiar symbol of Dia de los Muertos may be the calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls), which appear everywhere during the holiday: in candied sweets, as parade masks, as dolls. Calacas and calaveras are almost always portrayed as enjoying life, often in fancy clothes and entertaining situations.
