What can you do with a purple crayon?

Today, my second grade students read the book "Harold and the Purple Crayon" by Crockett Johnson.  I love, love, love this book.  If you haven't given it a tumble, I encourage you to check it out.  It speaks to the creativity of a young child and his imagination and where his purple crayon takes him.

Students were given a sheet of rolled newsprint and a purple crayon of their own.  Students were encouraged to develop their own story or journey with their purple crayon.  After students finish their drawing, they will write a brief story based upon their drawing.

We saw race cars

Families and homes

More race tracks...with loopy loops

A forest with trees

And students eager to show each other their creations.
My 2nd grade students read the book "A Color of His Own" by Leo Lionni.  They designed their own chameleon and wrote 2 to 3 facts that they learned in further studies of the interesting lizards.  For instance, did you know that 1/2 of the worlds entire population of chameleons live on the island of Madagascar?

Did you also know that most chameleons can change color in as little as 20 seconds?

Did you also know that typically, a chameleons tongue is twice the size of it's body length?

Did you also know that a chameleon's range of eye sight is 360 degrees and that it can look in two different directions at the same time?

Our 2nd and 3rd grade student display.  The 2nd grade read the book "A Color of His Own" (More posts to come) and the 3rd grade studied Piet Mondrian and his paintings.

We've gotten very positive feedback on these artworks.  The students really got into them and they are just fun to look at.

And our class pet is..........

Mr. Turtle!!!!!
Our class pet is a three toed box turtle, (yes, his back feet have three toes vs. four).  He enjoys relaxing by the pool, sleeping inside his cozy 1/2 log-bark bungalow and eating an assortment of greens and fruits.  His hobbies include posting on Shell-Book and reading his favorite magazine, Better Shells and Aquariums.  Each day, the first elementary class to arrive to art, has a selected student feed our little friend.  Look for more postings to follow when our students draw from life using our pet as the model.

Kinders at work

Here are some of my kindergarten students working on cutting skills, basic shapes and primary colors.  I love the energy and enthusiasm they bring to the class.
