This week the 6th grade classes began working on self portraits using transparency film taped to a mirror. It seems easy enough. Just trace your face and you will have a perfect self portrait.......right. OK, one factor that is so difficult is your binocular vision, (two eyes). When looking at an image up close, you fight between which eye should be the dominant eye and in doing so, the image can move on you, making it tricky to draw.
Students will complete a couple of drawings and will then photocopy their self portrait on the clear film, printing their drawing on copy paper. Students will then take their paper copies and will break their portrait up into shapes and fill in those shapes using color pencils or water colors. We will study Picasso and his abstract and cubist styles and see where inspiration will take these students.
