The 2nd grade class has studied Wassily Kandinsky and his paintings. After studying his paintings, students began creating their own Kandinsky inspired artworks. Students used paper plates and after paint was applied to the plate, they stamped the painted plate to their individual papers. Students had the options of stamping the painted plate and pulling it, or stamping it and turning the painted plate creating a blurred or mixed paint effect. Students then selected another paint color to add to their painted plate and repeated the process until the desired finished effect was achieved.
After the student paintings are dry, students will paint a solid contrasting color around the outside of their painted circles. Before that, students stood up in front of the class and explained which painting was their favorite, whcih colors they selected and why they liked it the best.
This was the first time students have been asked to discuss their own work in front of their peers. For a first time, I think they did well.
